HYDRO-FRASER HYDROPOWER PROJECT

The Hydro-Fraser hydropower project is a privately-owned site producing electricity on Hydro-Québec’s network since 1992. This facility is located in the Fraser pulp mill’s old building and was using the Fraser mill’s old wooden crib dam, its water intake and its 10’ wooden penstock. These infrastructures needed to be restored in order to ensure the continuity of the facility and to meet the renewable contract conditions for selling energy onto Hydro-Québec grid.

MACLOED-MOSHER MINE

This project consisted of preparing drawings and specifications for a rockfill dam with a height of 3.5 m and an emergency overflow weir used in the retention of pumped water coming from an old existing mine near the village of Geralton, 2 hours north-east of Thunder Bay. Le project also includes the design of a second rockfill closing-dyke and three energy-dissipating berms.

PORTNEUF RIVER HYDROELECTRIC INSTALLATIONS

Innergex hired Hydrosys to perform a dam safety evaluation of three of their dams located on Portneuf River, more specifically the dams PN1, PN2 and PN3. An inspection of the three dams was done in 2008, after which studies of the dams’ hydrology, hydraulics and stability were performed in 2009. These studies examined the risk presented by the dams to the adjacent infrastructures, including the risk posed by successive dam failures of all three dams. The installation includes four weirs, two intakes, four enclosure dikes and three small hydoelectric stations which produce a total of 28 MW.

MONTMAGNY DAM

Safety assessment of the Montmagny dam, located on the South River in the municipality of Montmagny. The study was realised in accordance with the laws included in the Dam Safety Act (LSB, 2000, c.9) (L.R.Q, chapter S-3.1.01).

The dam includes a weir, a water intake, a bypass channel and a hydroelectric generating station producing 2.1 MW.

3 DAMS ON THE SOUTH NATION RIVER

Dam safety assessment for the Chesterville, Crysler and Plantagenet dams located on the South Nation river in the municipalities of Chesterville, Crysler and Plantagenet, south-east of Ottawa. This study was realised in conjunction with the laws present in the Lakes and River Improvement Act and its Technical Bulletins (2011).

The structures that were under evaluation included a dam composed of five sluices, an overflow dam equipped with a two-sluice flood evacuator and second overflow dam.

WASDELL FALLS HYDROPOWER PROJECT

The Wasdell Falls project consists of retrofitting the existing dam owned by Ontario’s Department of Natural Resources in order to build a small, 2 MW hydroelectric powerplant. Three VLH (very low head) type turbines are to be installed on the left shore of the dam. A sluice bay of the existing dam structure was also modified in order to install a fourth turbine unit powering the reserved flows going through the bypass reach.

EL CONSUELO AND PIEDRA PUNTUDA HYDROPOWER PROJECTS

HEMCO Nicaragua S.A. mandated Hydrosys to perform the engineering of the EL Consuelo and the Piedra Puntuda hydroelectric projects in Nicaragua. These projects, currently in their prefeasibility stage, were developed to provide hydroelectricity for the industrial and domestic markets at competitive and stable costs, significantly lower than those achieved through fossil fuels. Both projects are designed as close coupled arrangement at low head that deliver about 12 MW and 8 MW of green energy.

REFURBESHING OF A PENSTOCK NENTILLA HYDROELECTRIC STATION

The demolition, design and replacement of a 395 m long penstock with a diameter of 1.6 m and located in a mountainous region. The same tasks were also applicable to the conduit’s support system, composed of five concrete massifs (primary supports) and 70 smaller concrete blocks (secondary supports). In all, the entire rugged section was replaced and the smooth section was treated.

Rio Gualcarque

RIO GUALCARQUE HYDROPOWER PROJECT

Rio Power S.A. mandated Hydrosys to perform the engineering of the Rio Gualcarque Waterpower Project in Honduras. The project will provide hydroelectric power for industrial and domestic markets at competitive and stable costs, significantly lower than those achieved through fossil fuels. The project includes the construction of a ±40 m high dam and a 5 km long penstock which will reach the powerhouse located 180 meters lower. The first phase will generate approximately 20 MW of green energy and a second phase could be added to the project to provide another 5 MW. Topographic surveying began in November 2009 and further engineering has followed in 2010. Project development has been successfully completed, land leases and acquisition as well as social and environmental licensing, further hydrology studies, geotechnical investigation work and cost estimations should be completed in 2013-2014 along with the financing agreements. Construction is planned to begin in 2015.

HYDROELECTRIC INSTALLATION THOMAS LOW

This project consists of an upgrade to the site’s hydropower production capacity and the construction of a new facility as well as the rehabilitation of existing components. The new 4 MW power plant requires the construction of a new water intake, a new penstock and a new power plant. The two existing power plants will be decommissioned and the new facility will provide an increase in the overall capacity while bypassing both existing structures with the help of a new penstock and by reusing the rehabilitated dam and headrace.

DOUGLAS FALLS HYDROPOWER PROJECT

Multistream Power Corporation hired Hydrosys to build a new powerhouse to maximize the site’s hydroelectric potential. The project consisted of modifying the existing dam, of demolishing the existing powerhouse and building a new larger plant able to accommodate six new Kaplan Vertical Saxo-type turbines capable of generating 1.8 MW of electricity. Also included in this project was the construction of an improved tailrace channel and a diversion wall to mitigate the potential environmental impacts of changing the downstream water flow patterns.
